  • 120mm cooling fan (longer life, better air flow vs small fans)
  • ActivePFC (no 110/220V switch, high power factor is required for use with UPSes)

  • M.2 PCIe SSD not recommended, if there is a glitch, PCIe bus hangs, computer stops without error messages, impossible to debug. also not clear how to recover data from this type of SSD if mobo dies.

Notes:

  • use 65W CPU for normal air cooled box
    • 100W CPU could be air cooled, with difficulties
    • above 100W CPU must be water cooled
  • use B650/X670 chipset, avoid mobo with small chipset cooling fan (sometimes they hide it)
  • count available PCIe slots:
    • often only 1 x16 slot wired for pcie x16
    • often 2 x16-size slots wired for 1x16 or 2x8 (if both are in use)
    • often additional x16 slot is wired for x4
    • x1 slots can be used for ethernet or video card
  • standard DDR5 DRAM includes on-chip ECC and is called "non-ECC RAM"
  • DDR5 ECC DRAM memory has additional lanes for on-CPU ECC. CPU and mobo must say "ECC supported", i.e. AMD 7700X and Supermicro mobo
  • how to select DDR5 modules:
  • choose speed supported by CPU:
  • choose minimum voltage and CAS latency, i.e.
  • typical 1.1V DDR5-5200 has CAS40
  • typical 1.25V DDR5-5200 has CAS36
  • typical 1.30V is DDR5-6000
  • typical 1.35V is DDR5-5600 and 6000
  • typical 1.4V is DDR5-6000
  • chosen GSKill DDR5 modules are DDR5-5600 CAS36 1.25V actually run at 1.1V
  • WD Blue SA510 series SSDs are not as good as previous WD Blue series: always report 0 power-on hours, on busy machines (dsdaqgw) seem to be actually wearing out. We should try the WD Red series.

  • for add-on 10gige NIC, use Intel X710-DA2 or Intel X710-BM2 (I struggle to find the differences between the two part numbers)
