Hello all,
I've recently acquired a MityCAMAC system that was built at TRIUMF and I'm
having issues accessing it over ethernet.
The system: Ubuntu VM inside Windows 10 machine.
I've tried reconfiguring the network settings for the VM but nmap and arp/ip
commands have yielded me no results in finding the crate controller.
I was getting help from Pierre Amaudruz but I think he is now busy for some
time. I have the mac address of the crate controller and its name. The
controller seems to initialize fine inside of the CAMAC crate. The windows side
of the workstation also tells me that an unknown network is in fact connected.
I suspect I either need to do something with an ssh key (which I thought we
accomplished but maybe not), or perhaps the domain name in the controller needs
to be changed.
If anybody has experience working with MityARM I would appreciate any advice I
could get.

For those curious about CAMAC controllers, this one was built around 2014 to
replace the aging CAMAC A1/A2 controllers (parallel and serial) in the TRIUMF
cyclotron controls system (around 50 CAMAC crates). It implements the main
and the auxiliary controller mode (single width and double width modules).
The design predates Altera Cyclone-5 SoC and has separate
ARM processor (TI 335x) and Cyclone-4 FPGA connected by GPMC bus.
ARM processor boots Linux kernel and CentOS-7 userland from an SD card,
FPGA boots from it's own EPCS flash.
User program running on the ARM processor (i.e. a MIDAS frontend)
initiates CAMAC operations, FPGA executes them. Quite simple.

I am an applied physicist at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and am in the process
of migrating the full experiment configuration—including the front-end interface—
of the CRIPT muon tomography detector from a legacy version of MIDAS (SVN Rev.
5238, circa 2012) to a more modern release.
The current system runs on Scientific Linux 6 and very old hardware. Due to
substantial changes in the MIDAS codebase over the years, I have encountered
multiple compatibility issues during the migration. I have also attempted to build
and run the legacy MIDAS version and the front-end code using GCC 4.8 on a modern
Linux system (Ubuntu 24.04), but without success.
Could you please advise on the recommended approach for upgrading or refactoring
legacy MIDAS front-end code to the current framework? Any guidance or best
practices would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest updating the midas version. You should be able to get to at least midas 2024-12-a
without breaking anything.

The 2019-06 release was the c -> c++ transition. Read that section carefully.
The 2020-12 update also had a change that you will also likely want to update your FEs for.
You will also likely encounter a quite a few non-midas issues related to the newer compilers.
Updates to your front ends may include things like needing to use "const char*" instead of "char*",
adding extra headers like <cstring> and <cstdlib>, using ctime_r() instead of ctime(), etc
Post back if you have specific questions.
P.S. I'm maintaining a number of midas FEs mostly written around 2007-2009.
These were running on SL5 and SL6 for many years and are now on Alma 9 with
midas 2024-12-a. |

Right, good vintage midas and linux. But in the current security environment,
we must run currently supported OS (and MIDAS), and we must never fall off
the yearly/bi-yearly OS upgrade threadmill.
How old is your computer hardware and do you plan to update it, as well? If you OS
is installed on an HDD, definitely move to an SSD would be good. If you are hard
on money, a RaspberryPi5 with 16GB RAM may be good enough for what you have.
Anyhow new OS choice would be Ubuntu 24 or Debian 13. I do not recommend Red Hat based OS (vanilla
RHEL, Fedora, Alma, Rocky), they have become niche OSes with minimal vendor and community support.

The big change in MIDAS land is move to c++, then c++11, then to c++17, and move from vanilla make to
cmake.
MIDAS API has been reasonably stable since then, but very old MIDAS frontends would fail to build with
latest compilers because of changes in c++ language and changes in the c and c++ libraries.

this is non-viable, latest C/C++ compilers reject perfectly good SL6-era C/C++ code, old MIDAS would
not compile, old frontends would not compile.

What you are doing, we have done several times with TRIUMF experiments,
updating SL6 and CentOS-7 MIDAS instances to current MIDAS, C++ and OS:
1) new computer with Ubuntu 24 (or Debian or Raspbian). (U-26 will come out roughly in August, fo rth
epurposes of this discussion).
2) new MIDAS. we generally recommend the head of the develop branch, but older tagged version are
okey, too.
3) apache https proxy, etc, for secure browser connections, see
https://daq00.triumf.ca/DaqWiki/index.php/Ubuntu#Install_apache_httpd_proxy_for_midas_and_elog
4) reload your old ODB into the new MIDAS
5) your old history, etc should work
6a) build your old frontends, this will be a chore, but if you look at the compile errors, you will
see that most changes are very mechanical (i.e. const char*, etc). biggest hassle is ot make your old
C/C++ code to build with current C++17 compiler, smaller hassle is to update for minor changes in the
mfe.h API.
6b) bite the bullet and rewrite your frontends using the C++ tmfe API, start with
tmfe_example_everything.cxx, remove unnecessary, add required, pretty straightforward, I can guide you
through this (contact me directly by email).
7) minor tweeks to mlogger, mhttpd and history settings
8) rewrite all customs pages to the current mjsonrpc API

MidasWiki was updated to current mediawiki LTS 1.39.6 supported until Nov 2025,

as downside, after this update, I see large amounts of "account request" spam,
something that did not exist before. I suspect new mediawiki phones home to
subscribe itself to some "please spam me" list.

We have a problem with over aggressive AI bots. They are scanning everything and
are putting a crazy load on the mediawiki mysql database. This makes all out
wikis very slow and unresponsive, which is a big problem.
These AI scanners do not seem to know what they are doing and are trying to load
all the special pages, like "what links here" and "recent changes" and complete
revision histories for each page. I am not impressed. Old school google and bing
scanner bots are much more respectful and do not cause problems.
AI bots are also scanning this elog, and to Stefan's credit elogd is holding the
load just fine.
To reduce load on the MidasWiki mysql database, I now restricted access to most
special pages to logged in users. It seems to have helped.
If this causes big difficulty or if you have suggestion on better ways to deal
with aggressive AI scanner bots, please speak up.
One alternative is to put MidasWiki behind a generic login page with a well
known password. Downside is it will block google and bing search engines, too.

As the Midas software is installed using CMake, it can be easily integrated into
other CMake projects using the MidasConfig.cmake file produced during the Midas
installation.
This file points to the location of the include and libraries of Midas using three
variables:
- MIDAS_INCLUDE_DIRS
- MIDAS_LIBRARY_DIRS
- MIDAS_LIBRARIES
Then the CMakeLists file of the new project can use the CMake find_package
functionalities like:

How does "find_package (Midas REQUIRED)" find the location of MIDAS?
The best I can tell from the current code, the package config files are installed
inside $MIDASSYS somewhere and I see "find_package MIDAS" never find them (indeed,
find_package() does not know about $MIDASSYS, so it has to use telepathy or something).
Does anybody actually use "find_package(midas)", does it actually work for anybody?
Also it appears that "the cmake way" of importing packages is to use
the install(EXPORT) method.
In this scheme, the user package does this:
include(${MIDASSYS}/lib/midas-targets.cmake)
target_link_libraries(myprogram PUBLIC midas)
this causes all the midas include directories (including mxml, etc)
and dependancy libraries (-lutil, -lpthread, etc) to be automatically
added to "myprogram" compilation and linking.
of course MIDAS has to generate a sensible targets export file,
working on it now.

What we do is to include midas as a submodule and than we call find_package:

list(APPEND CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH ${CMAKE_CURRENT_SOURCE_DIR}/midas)
find_package(Midas REQUIRED)
For us it works fine like this but we kind of always compile Midas fresh and don't use a version on our system (keeping the newest version).
Without the find_package the build does not work for us. |

Ok, I see. I now think that for us, this "find_package" business an unnecessary complication:
since one has to know where midas is in order to add it to CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH,
one might as well import the midas targets directly by include(.../midas/lib/midas-targets.cmake).
From what I see now, the cmake file is much simplifed by converting
it from "find_package(midas)" style MIDAS_INCLUDES & co to more cmake-ish
target_link_libraries(myexe midas) - all the compiler switches, include paths,
dependant libraires and gunk are handled by cmake automatically.
I am not touching the "find_package(midas)" business, so it should continue to work, then.

MidasConfig.cmake might at some point get included in the standard Cmake installation (or some add-on). It will then reside in the Cmake system path
and you don't have to explicitly know where this is. Just the find_package(Midas) will then be enough.
Even if it's not there, the find_package() is the "traditional" way CMake discovers external packages and users are used to that (like ROOT does the
same). In comparison, your "midas-targets.cmake" way of doing things, although this works certainly fine, is not the "standard" way, but a midas-
specific solution, other people have to learn extra.

Hi, Stefan, can you say more about this? If MidasConfig.cmake is part of the cmake distribution,
(did I understand you right here?) and is installed into a system-wide directory,
how can it know to use midas from /home/agmini/packages/midas or from /home/olchansk/git/midas?
Certainly we do not do system wide install of midas (into /usr/local/bin or whatever) because
typically different experiments running on the same computer use different versions of midas.
For ROOT, it looks as if for find_package(ROOT) to work, one has to add $ROOTSYS to the Cmake package
search path. This is what we do in our cmake build.
As for find_package() vs install(EXPORT), we may have the same situation as with my "make cmake",
where my one line solution is no good for people who prefer to type 3 lines of commands.
Specifically, the install(EXPORT) method defines the "midas" target which brings with it
all it's dependent include paths, libraries and compile flags. So to link midas you need
two lines:
include(.../midas/lib/midas-targets.cmake)
target_link_libraries(myexe midas)
target_link_libraries(myfrontend mfe)
whereas find_package() defines a bunch of variables (the best I can tell) and one has
to add them to the include paths and library paths and compile flags "by hand".
I do not know how find_package() handles the separate libmidas, libmfe and librmana. (and
the separate libmanalyzer and libmanalyzer_main).
