For the record, here's my report of difficulties getting mongoose to compile with macos.  This is a similar 
problem reported before, but with slightly different error messages.  So I put them here for posterity.

Setup: 
- macos: 10.13.6
- xcode: 9.2
- gcc: Thomass-MacBook-Pro-3:build lindner$ gcc --version
Configured with: --prefix=/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/usr --with-gxx-include-

Fine.  Doing 'cmake -D NO_SSL=1 ..' to build still works fine; I will stick with that since I don't need SSL on my 
laptop.

Perhaps we should disable SSL by default on Macos?  People may only have ~50% chance of getting it to

But Konstantin will need to explain how this class is supposed to be used more generally.  The example programs have a mix with sometimes needing leading slashes and other times not:

A warning, in case others have the same problem I had.

In the past you could configure mhttpd so that the 'Elog' button would redirect to an external ELOG server; to do this you only needed to create and set the ODB variable '/Elog/URL' to the URL of your external ELOG server.

But with the newer MIDAS you need to set two ODB variables:

* "/Elog/URL" needs to be set to the URL of the external ELOG.
* "/Elog/External Elog" needs to be set to 'y'

I hadn't noticed this and was confused why my Elog button wasn't working after upgrading MIDAS.

MIDAS documentation was updated to reflect this change:

I have a more subtle point about the new ODB key for using an external elog I mentioned in [1].  I was very confused after changing the ODB "External Elog" because mhttpd still wasn't using my external elog URL.  I started trying to debug mhttpd.cxx, but found a lot of bits of mhttpd didn't seem to be getting called.  I eventually realized that my browser had been caching the responses for some (though not all) of the MIDAS navigation buttons.  Clearing my browser cache fixed the problem and allowed me to use the MIDAS button to the external ELOG.  This caching happens on my macbook for both Firefox 84.0.2 and Safari 13.1.

Many of the requests to mhttpd end up going to send_fp(), where we explicitly set the cache time to 24 hours.

Some other MIDAS buttons don't seem to be cached by the browser; for instance the response for the 'OldHistory' button doesn't get cached.

Should we remove the cache instruction for at least some of the buttons?  At least for the elog button where we want the link direction to get switched by an ODB key the caching seems a bad idea.

I tried reloading the pages.  If I reloaded the actual elog page 

https://server.triumf.ca/?cmd=Elog

then it bypassed the cache and got the correct updated page from mhttpd.

However, if when I reloaded the status page

https://server.triumf.ca/?cmd=Status

and then clicked the Elog button then I just got the cached (old) page.  Admittedly reloading the status page doesn't make so much sense (once I thought about it), but it is what I tried first (I'm good at modelling unexpected user behaviour); so there is some risk that the user will try reloading the wrong page and will be stuck not getting the external elog page (until 24 hours runs out).

Anyway, I will update the documentation to note that you need to reload the elog page after changing this variable.  That's probably an adequate solution.

I certainly don't suggest getting rid of caching entirely.  I was trying to think whether there was a set of pages where it would make sense to disable the cache (like the elog page).  But maybe that will just cause more problems.

Could you help me solve the problem of compatibility between our frontend (created in 2017) and the fresh MIDAS? The old MIDAS (2017) worked well, then we did not use it.
While compiling the frontend, I get a lot of warnings and a few compilation errors.

Hi,

I have noticed a problem with deleting a key to an array in odb, then
recreating the record as in the code below. The record is recreated
successfully, but when viewing it with mhttpd, a spurious blank line
(coloured orange) is visible, followed by the rest of the data as normal.

This blank line causes trouble with experim.h because it
produces an empty structure e.g. :

I am using an external Custom web page via a link in the ODB in /Custom, and
Javascript to add customscript button(s) and run start/stop buttons.

After executing these buttons, instead of returning to the custom page, or
to the Midas main status page, there is an error page generated:

Invalid custom page: NULL path
and the URL is 

http://lxfred:8082/CS/

The behaviour is the same whether the custom page replaces the main status page
or not.

I am using
MIDAS version 2.0.0
mhttpd.c SVN Rev 4282

In an older version of mhttpd.c, buttons of this type used to return to the
Midas main status page regardless of whether the custom page replaced the status
page. I found this behaviour annoying, and I made a custom mhttpd.c that
returned to the custom page. 
Would it be possible to fix this problem, and to return to the custom page after
pressing the buttons?

I can get round this by using an input box and a combination of ODBGet and

The Javascript library which you can view

now supports ODBEdit as well as ODBGet and ODBSet
 
I advise you get the latest version of mhttpd.c so you can use ODBEdit which changes
the ODB value directly via ODBSet.

You use it like this:

You can also use HTML to edit the variables, but the advantage of Javascript is that

Note the "edit=2" feature is handy so that you can use Javascript or HTML on your
page and the user sees no difference.

Would you consider using a different colour for the alias buttons (or background
colour)? At present it's hard to know whether a button is an alias link, a custom page
link or a user-button especially if you are not familiar with the button layout. 

Hi,

On a custom web page, can a "filled" area be made to flash (i.e. cycle between 
two colours)? This area would have to update faster than the whole page update.
 
I have a custom page representing a gas system, and the users
want the heaters to flash when they are on, as is done in their EPICS page.

Thank you - I have added it to the documentation.

A link to an array variable such as

[local:npet:Stopped]/>ls /rcparams/ControlVariables/
TRFC:PB5 (V) -> /Equipment/Beamline/Variables/Demand[56]

displays the whole Demand array on the mhttpd ODB page (see attachment)
rather than just the one element Demand[56].
This behaviour also occurs with older versions of mhttpd.
 
Not sure if it's a bug or a feature, but my suggestion is that it
ought to display the one element only (as odbedit does) and not the whole array.
